Plans are underway for a major redevelopment of Kenmore State High School to help it accommodate growing student numbers.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said $500,000 had been allocated to begin the design and planning of the project which could see enrolment capacity increased to 2000.

“This is just the beginning of a major multi-stage expansion of the school, which will start in 2008 and continue over the next few years,” Mr Welford said.

“The expansion of this popular school is part of our Government’s commitment to providing modern facilities so Queensland students have the best possible learning environment.

“We are addressing a growing need for additional facilities at the high school, because the rapid expansion of outlying suburbs continues to mean increased enrolments.”

Mr Welford said Kenmore State High School currently had more than 1500 students who travelled from a large number of suburbs in Brisbane’s west.

“This expansion will allow additional students to attend the school, with preference given to students in the Mount Crosby, Karana Downs and Karalee areas,” he said.

“During this planning phase, consultants will be engaged to work with the school and local community on a master plan.

“Parents, staff, students and residents will all be closely involved in this redevelopment project.”

Member for Ipswich West, Wayne Wendt, said the expansion of Kenmore State High School was good news for Karalee residents who wanted to send their children to the school.

“This project will help additional students access educational opportunities offered at this school which is renowned for its high academic achievements,” Mr Wendt said.

“I look forward to seeing how this exciting project unfolds and the benefits it will have for students in these outlying suburbs.”
