Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
RAINFALL IN THE TRAVESTON CROSSING DAM CATCHMENT
Premier Peter Beattie said today suggestions that the catchment for the Traveston Crossing Dam did not extend to Maleny were wrong.
“The Australian Bureau of Meteorology clearly includes Maleny and the area surrounding it as part of the catchment for its flood maps for the Mary Valley,” Mr Beattie said.
The map can be viewed here : http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/qld/brochures/mary/map.shtml
“I am advised that the Bureau of Meteorology factors in the rainfall measurements for Maleny, Harpers Creek and Obi Lookout among other sites, simply because the water that falls in these areas runs into the Mary Valley.
“The Mary Valley is of course, the site of the Traveston Crossing Dam.
“As I told the Parliament yesterday falls were registered of up to 70 mm in the catchment.
“The Bureau of Meteorology confirms that Maleny and other stations including those at Harpers Creek and the Obi Lookout has registered falls of 70 mm and more.
“The run-off from this rain flows into Obi Obi Creek and the Mary River.
“When the Traveston Crossing Dam is built, the waters will be held by the dam wall.
“Just as the Bureau of Meteorology considers Maleny to be part of the catchment for the area, so too do the builders of the dam,” the Premier said.
Also attached are the rainfall measures for the Mary, including the Maleny area as provided by the Bureau of Meteorology.
