Special Process provides compensation for former Patel patients

Three-quarters of the claims under a Queensland Government scheme to provide fair and reasonable compensation for former patients of Jayant Patel have been dealt with, Attorney-General Kerry Shine said today.

Mr Shine said in all, 385 claims have been lodged to date under the Special Process scheme.

“A further 15 claims were settled last week, and another five claims are to be mediated this week,” Mr Shine said.

“The total number of claims settled is now 225.”

“A further 66 claims are considered to be not eligible for compensation, because they are regarded as being either not Patel patients or no adverse outcomes of the treatment.”

“However, every opportunity is given to these claimants to substantiate their eligibility. I urge any of those claimants to bring forward any additional information they may have. That additional information will be considered.”

Mr Shine said it meant three-quarters (75%) of all Special Process claims to date have been dealt with.

“As Attorney-General, I am committed to ensure the Special Process is fair,” Mr Shine said.

“I am also committed to accept claims from former Patel who develop medical problems in the future as a result of Patel procedures.”
