Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Pat Purcell
The overnight rain which has drenched Brisbane and the South East has provided a reminder for all homeowners about the importance of preventative roof maintenance.
Emergency Services Minister Pat Purcell said while the rain is a welcome relief it can cause headaches for homeowners.
“It’s been a long time since Brisbane has experienced such heavy rain, and that resulted in some calls to the SES for assistance,” he said.
“It’s important to remember roofs can change and crack over time so this rain provides a timely reminder for residents to ensure their roof is checked.
“Our volunteers are there to help residents in times of need but we ask residents to also help us by making sure their roofs are in a good state of repair.”
Executive Director Frank Pagano said overnight SES crews were called to four homes at Camp Hill, Indooroopilly, The Gap and Stafford.
There have also been calls for help today from Dakabin, Thornlands and Redcliffe for help with leaking roofs and skylights.
“The SES is happy to respond to calls that involve damage as a result of storms but we remind homeowners they are responsible for general maintenance of their property,” Mr Pagano said.
The rain has exposed some of the common problems which can arise with roofs which go unchecked for long periods of time.
“Due to the dangers associated with climbing on roofs without appropriate safety equipment or in wet conditions, the SES advises residents to consult with a professional tradesperson about any repairs,” Mr Pagano said.
