LIVESTOCK SEMINAR TO OPEN UP EXPORT PROSPECTS

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries is holding free seminars in Toowoomba and Rockhampton on export prospects for the beef and goat livestock industries in Queensland.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said the seminars will focus on South East Asia, the Pacific and South America as potential export markets.

“The seminars are an opportunity for business owners to learn about these markets and determine if they are suitable for exporting their products or services,” Mr Mulherin said.

“Before committing to export, it is essential to get a real handle on the market. A great place to start is the market intelligence regularly gathered by government agencies such as DPI&F and Austrade.

“Understanding the market is crucial for a business in identifying whether the demand and their supply capabilities are viable.”

The seminars will be held on Friday 22 June in Toowoomba and Thursday 26 July in Rockhampton. They will be particularly relevant to suppliers of livestock related equipment and technologies, animal genetics, farm/animal management and consulting services, feed and supplements, veterinary products and services, pasture/forage seeds and livestock.

“The seminars will connect attendees with companies and government agencies that have experience in, and knowledge of, exporting livestock services and supplies,” Mr Mulherin said.

Queensland companies involved in livestock services and supplies have benefited in recent times from increased interest from overseas markets, with almost $3 million in export contracts secured from the Beef Australia 2006 Handshakes program.

“The DPI&F-led Handshakes program was held in collaboration with Austrade and the Department of State Development, and matched over 200 overseas representatives from 17 countries with Queensland businesses,” he said.

“We are continuing to build on these contacts to assist Queensland companies boost exports and access additional markets.”

The seminars will run from 9.00am to 12.45pm and be held at DPI&F’s Toowoomba (Tor St) Complex and Rockhampton (Parkhurst) Complex.

To register for a seminar, contact DPI&F on 13 25 23 or email trade@dpi.qld.gov.au.

Registrations close 15 June for Toowoomba, and 19 July for Rockhampton. Places are limited.
