Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Celebrities and MPs don football boots to campaign against racism
Television and sporting stars, musicians and Parliamentarians are set to red card racism in Queensland by signing up to play in the curtain raiser for the Queensland Roar FC vs South Africa’s SuperSport United match on 1 July at Suncorp Stadium.
Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the celebrity game was part of the first major event for the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign aimed at increasing social cohesion and harmony and sending clear messages that racism will not be tolerated in Queensland.
Ms Nelson-Carr said it was encouraging that tickets were selling fast for the match and she expected even more people would want to see local stars and politicians take to the field in the ‘Buffalo Sports Celebrity Stampede Against Racism’.
“We are very fortunate here in Queensland to have more than 200 cultural groups now calling Queensland home. These groups get on very well together but we cannot afford to be complacent and must do all we can to prevent and address racism.”
“This match is a great way to celebrate the cultural diversity in our state and highlight that actions of racism will not be tolerated.
“Among the Members of Parliament who will be polishing their own boots and joining high profile Queenslanders in ‘red carding racism’ are the Minister for Health Stephen Robertson, the Member for Stafford Stirling Hinchcliffe , and my Parliamentary Secretary and Member for Capalaba Michael Choi.
“Queensland’s current Multicultural Champion and renowned author Nick Earls has led the celebrity charge and will join team captains Tatiana Gregorieva and Ranger Stacey on match day.
“Catherine Freeman, Lisa Curry-Kenny, Steve Renouf, William McInnes, Ranger Tim, James Blundell, Big Wal, Anton Enus, Ditch Davey and Jason Roe will all be vying for the first goal.
"These wonderful personalities are keen to lend their names to the anti-racism message.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the match day on 1 July was shaping up well, with entertainment and stalls outside and a program of entertainment within the stadium.
Tickets are on sale at Ticketek.
