Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence
HUGE SUPPORT FROM WATER TANK COMPANIES TO PRISON PLAN
Nine water tank companies have expressed an interest in joining the State Government in manufacturing water tanks at Woodford Correctional Centre, Minister for Corrective Services Judy Spence announced today.
“When the Premier and I announced our plan to build water tanks at Woodford in April water tank manufacturers welcomed the idea and told me it would help address a massive labour shortage in the industry,” Ms Spence said.
“Four of the companies which have expressed an interest make metal water tanks and five manufacture plastic tanks.
“Queensland Corrective Services will conduct a tour of the Woodford prison tomorrow to show these companies the facilities available to them for this project.”
Ms Spence said the nine companies will now submit tenders by 22nd June before Queensland Corrective Services enters into negotiations with the successful party or parties.
“We are proposing to manufacture 50 water tanks per week at Woodford prison however this project could be expanded to other prisons if it is successful,” Ms Spence said.
“I am pleased to see so many water tank companies are interested in working with the government on this important project which will help reduce the long delays in supplying water tanks to homes in Queensland.
“These companies see the benefits of this project which will give prisoners important skills they can use in the water tank industry once they finish their sentence,” Ms Spence said.
