Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine

EMBARGOED UNTIL 2:30PM 5 JUNE 2007 $13.6M more to help Queenslanders access legal services

More Queenslanders will be able to access free legal aid following a funding boost of $13.6 million in today’s State Budget.

Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerry Shine said Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) would receive an additional $12.5 million in 2007-08, with a further $1.1 million earmarked for community legal centres and initiatives.

“This increase will help some of the most disadvantaged members of the community, including children, victims of assault, the mentally ill and Indigenous men and women,” Mr Shine said.

“It will ensure LAQ is able to meet the growing demand for its services, particularly in the areas of criminal law and child protection.

“It will also provide a significant boost to community legal centres by funding additional staff and program initiatives, including the coordination of pro bono services across the state.

“There are many disadvantaged families going through difficult times and this Budget will help them access the legal advice and representation they need,” Mr Shine said.

“The additional funding will be provided from the Legal Practitioners Interest on Trust Account Fund, administered by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.”

Mr Shine said approximately $695,000 would be used for additional staffing at 12 community legal centres across Queensland. A further $419,000 has been allocated for six initiatives under the community legal centres program.
