For Parliamentary Week beginning Tuesday 5 June, 2007
Premier Peter Beattie said today that the bills to be introduced to Parliament this week include:
CLEAN COAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIAL AGREEMENT BILL 2007, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure
The Bill provides for the formation of the Clean Coal Council to advise the Premier on priorities for funding to accelerate the demonstration, development and widespread implementation and use of clean coal technologies to achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. It provides approval for the Premier to enter the Queensland Coal Agreement and to reinforce the commitment of the Queensland Government and the coal industry to accelerating the deployment of clean coal technology.
CAPE YORK PENINSULA HERITAGE BILL 2007, Premier and Minister for Trade
The Bill is for a new Act, the Cape York Peninsula Heritage Act, and will also amend the Aboriginal Land Act 1991, Land Act 1994, Nature Conservation Act 1992, Vegetation Management Act 1999 and Wild Rivers Act 2005. The Bill will provide for the identification and protection of significant natural and cultural values of Cape York Peninsula, and its cooperative and ecologically sustainable management.
The Bill is considered to be symbolic by acknowledging the respective aspirations of Indigenous communities of Cape York Peninsula, conservation interests and the pastoral industry and will:
• enshrine joint management of national parks with indigenous owners;
• allow development on Aboriginal land when supported by appropriate scientific and economic assessment;
• create the ability for land trusts to form sub-regional aggregations for the purposes of negotiating about resources and park management;
• identify areas of World Heritage significance; and
• reward graziers who choose to protect world heritage values on their properties.
