BEATTIE DELIVERS EXTRA RESOURCES FOR POLICE IN INDIGENOUS AREAS
Premier Peter Beattie said the Government would honour its commitment to install or upgrade CCTV in all public areas of watchhouses in Indigenous communities.
Mr Beattie said the upcoming State Budget would include $1.5 million to deliver this promise by February 2008.
“I made a commitment in February this year following a meeting with the Police Commissioner and representatives of the Queensland Police Union and the Queensland Police Commissioned Officers Union, to work with them to improve the resources for policing in Indigenous communities.
“They raised a number of issues with Police Minister Judy Spence and I, including the installation of closed circuit digital recording equipment in all custodial areas in police stations.
“The Government will fund the installation and upgrade of CCTV is all public areas of watchhouses in Indigenous communites, and will do by February 2008,” he said.
Minister for Police Judy Spence said the funding was a further demonstration of the Beattie Government’s commitment to provide a safe environment for the state’s police officers.
“This Budget commitment to upgrade CCTV in watchhouses will improve the safety of offenders and police working in Indigenous communities,” Ms Spence said.
“The first CCTV in public areas in Police stations will be in Woorabinda, Palm Island and Aurukun,” she said.
