Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

STATEMENT FROM THE PREMIER, PETER BEATTIE RE: MERRI ROSE MATTER

This was a matter before the court and I accept the decision of the court.

A suppression order was made and I like everyone else will abide by it.

I am able to say however, as it is a matter of public record, that I referred the matter in the first place to the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

As Premier I had no choice but to take immediate action to have what was a very serious matter brought to the attention of the CMC.

CMC Chairman Robert Needham has previously stated:

"Under the Crime and Misconduct Act, the Premier had an obligation to refer that matter to us, under our Act, and he carried out that obligation and he referred it to me."

Implicit in that decision to refer the matter to the CMC was an understanding that all of the facts and allegations involved in the matter would be closely investigated by the CMC - which you will remember has all the powers of a standing royal commission.

Criminal matters were referred to the courts and those matters have now been dealt with.

Queenslanders can be assured that their legal system is operating as it should - without fear or favour and with independence and integrity.
