Queensland Government outlines its care for carers

The Queensland Government today reaffirmed its commitment to the state’s growing army of carers during a one-day forum on the Sunshine Coast.

Minister for Communities and Disability Services Warren Pitt said the government was working hard to ensure the estimated 536,000 carers across Queensland received the support and recognition they deserved.

“The Queensland Government has made a commitment to recognise the often unpaid work carried out by carers and to make an effort to support them in their daily role,” Mr Pitt said.

“The number of carers in Queensland is increasing, as is the number of people requiring care, so it is important that we develop responsive and relevant programs and policies to deliver quality services and support for our carers.”

Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan, who represented Mr Pitt at the Caring for Carers event hosted by Maroochydore’s Quest College, highlighted the progress being made since the release of the Queensland Government Carer Action Plan 2006-2010 and the recently revised Queensland Government Carer Recognition Policy.

“These documents were designed to recognise the significant contribution carers make to Queensland communities and to outline the ways in which this could be achieved,” Mrs Sullivan said.

“One of the key initiatives of the Action Plan that will directly benefit carers is the introduction of the Carer Card.

“The Carer Card is a way for the Queensland Government to provide a tangible display of recognition for the valuable role played by carers.”

The Carer Card will be modelled on the Seniors Business Discount Card scheme, and will enable eligible carers to access discounts for services and products at participating businesses. It will become operational in 2007-08.
