The Honourable Peter Beattie
Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Warren Pitt
YOUNG LEADERS KEY TO RECONCILIATION
A group of young Indigenous leaders will end a hectic four-day forum tomorrow, receiving certificates from Premier Peter Beattie and attending important Reconciliation Week activities.
Mr Beattie said the Young Indigenous Leaders Forum, involving 20 young Indigenous Queenslanders and three visiting representatives from South Africa, was a key part of the State Government’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
“My Government remains committed to advancing reconciliation and working towards a better future for all Queenslanders,” Mr Beattie said.
“Reconciliation is everyone’s business and the this week’s leaders forum and Reconciliation Awards for Business tomorrow night are major events that celebrate leadership and set new benchmarks for others to follow.”
There are three major events tomorrow, Thursday, May 31:
Young Indigenous Leaders Forum;
Reconciliation Business Forum;
Reconciliation Awards for Business ceremony – (winner announced approx 7pm).
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Warren Pitt said forum participants were learning valuable leadership and networking skills and meeting prominent Indigenous achievers such as footballers Preston Campbell and Steve Renouf, Young Australian of the Year Tania Major, business leaders and Governor Quentin Bryce.
“They are learning about leadership, discussing issues of concern in their communities and making some life-changing relationships,” Mr Pitt said.
“This year’s forum theme is Across two worlds, which aims to recognise the challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in their own communities and within the broader Queensland community,” he said.
“The Reconciliation Business Forum tomorrow will focus on ways to encourage Indigenous economic development and explore business opportunities for Indigenous communities throughout Queensland.”
The Reconciliation Awards for Business on Thursday night will recognise and reward individuals, businesses and communities who proactively support reconciliation in the workplace.
Premier Beattie will present the awards at the official ceremony at Parliament House where $30,000 in prize money will be announced across five categories.
