The Honourable Margaret Keech

Hotels recommend Queensland wines for Queensland Week

Queensland wines will soon be on the tip of everyone’s tongue thanks to a new promotion launched by Wine Industry Development Minister Margaret Keech today.

Mrs Keech congratulated the Queensland Hotels Association for actively supporting Queensland wineries as she officially launched the 2007 Queensland Week Queensland wine promotion at the Breakfast Creek Hotel.

“Queensland now boasts an impressive range of award winning wines,” Mrs Keech said.

“Having these listed on wine lists in as many Queensland hotels and restaurants as possible is the key to the future success of our industry.

“Of course, it’s also the key to ensuring that Queenslanders can easily enjoy some of the fine wines for which our State is fast becoming known throughout Australia.

“Beginning in Queensland Week and continuing for a further three months, the Queensland Hotels Association will showcase Queensland wines in 24 of their affiliated hotels, restaurants and bottleshops across Queensland.

“As an added bonus, during Queensland Week, hotel restaurant patrons will receive a complimentary glass of Queensland wine when purchasing a meal.

“Over the past decade, the number of wineries and the volume of wine produced in Queensland has increased more than ten fold.

“My Department has listed on our web site the Brisbane outlets that sell Queensland wines and the list is growing all the time.

“It has already surpassed 500 – considerably higher than wine producers would have thought possible 10 years ago.”

The promotion is an initiative of the Queensland Hotels Association, in partnership with the Queensland Wine Industry Association and the Department of Tourism, Fair Trading and Wine Industry Development.

Mrs Keech said other promotional activities were also planned, including winemaker dinners, wine tastings in hotel bottleshops and a competition to win a trip for two on QRail Traveltrain to Cairns.

“I would like to congratulate Queensland Hotels Association on this great initiative, and I’d encourage all Queenslanders to come along to one of the participating hotels and enjoy a Queensland wine or two,” she said.

President of the Queensland Wine Industry Association, Maryanne Pidcock also praised supporters of Queensland’s wine industry.

“This promotion by the Queensland Hotels Association is a fantastic opportunity for Queenslanders to try some this State’s best wine at their favourite hotel. On behalf of the industry, I thank everyone involved in coordinating this event.”
