Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
SMART STATE FRONT AND CENTRE AT WORLD’S BIGGEST SHOW IN 2010
Queensland will have a strong presence at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai with a myriad of Queensland ideas, arts, services, products and cultural icons on show to the world, Premier Peter Beattie announced today.
Mr Beattie said the Queensland Government would invest $3.6 million over the next four years to ensure Queensland makes maximum impact at the Expo which will run from May 1 to October 31, 2010.
“The Queensland Government invested $1.4 million in World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan with the special Queensland Week in April 2005 attracting more than 71,000 visitors to the Australian Pavilion,” Mr Beattie said.
“We are keen to lift Queensland’s profile even higher in Shanghai.
“Queensland has a long standing Sister State relationship with Shanghai which will be re-signed later this year. A strong Queensland strong presence in Shanghai at the Expo will further strengthen those ties.
“We are confident World Expo 2010 will provide a strong platform for businesses, governments, education and research organisations to cement existing relationships with China and ignite new opportunities,” Mr Beattie
“China is Queensland's third largest merchandise export destination and our largest source of international students.
“Last year 9200 Chinese students studied in Queensland and we are keen to increase those numbers.
“Participating in World Expo 2010 will provide an unprecedented opportunity to profile the State's trade and investment capability and to expand scientific, educational and cultural links with China.
“Queensland plans to participate in the Australian Pavilion at the Expo. Our partnership worked well in Aichi and we believe it will be equally fruitful in Shanghai.
“The funding will enable detailed planning for World Expo 2010 to begin.
“We need to develop a strong promotional plan to showcase Queensland's capabilities to potential and existing business partners and the world media,” Mr Beattie said.
