SUNSHINE MAKES WAY FOR TOURING TRAVELLERS

The drive tourism market is accelerating with the launch of a new southern Queensland touring route today.

Premier Peter Beattie launched the Great Sunshine Way touring route at the tourism trade show, the Australian Tourism Exchange 2007.

Mr Beattie said domestic drive tourism was worth $4.2 billion each year to the State’s economy and the introduction of a touring route targeting international visitors would generate more growth in an already lucrative market.

“The Great Sunshine Way links the key southern Queensland regions including the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, the Fraser Coast and southern country areas of Queensland,” Mr Beattie said.

“Where else in the world offers such a variety of exciting world class products and experiences all within a three hour radius of Brisbane?

“Southern Queensland boasts two World Heritage Listed areas, some of the best beaches in the world, food and wine that are second to none and many surprises off the beaten track.

“As a new product in the market place, the Great Sunshine Way is geared to provide international visitors with an incredible variety of experiences.

“They can pick and choose their destinations according to personal preference, and conveniently access them by road and rail.

“In other words, our trade partners can mix and match the product offerings along the Great Sunshine Way, and tailor them to their customers’ needs.”

Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said this was another great example of Queensland’s visionary approach to attracting international visitors.

“It provides international travel agents, and their clients, fresh and exciting opportunities for those with the time and desire to discover the real Queensland,” Mrs Keech said.

“The Beattie Government is committed to the development of themed touring routes that maximise the thrill and adventure of discovery.

“And I am pleased to say this initiative is an early outcome of the $48 million Queensland Tourism Strategy – our 10-year plan for tourism.”

Mrs Keech joined Mr Beattie in launching the Great Sunshine Way to more than 420 international travel buyers.

Australian Tourism Exchange is the largest tourism trade show to be staged in the southern hemisphere and one of the top events for the industry worldwide.

In partnership with Tourism Australia, Queensland is host to Australian Tourism Exchange 2007 being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre all this week.

More than 2000 delegates have registered to attend the eight-day event.
