EASTERN TOURISTS TARGETED IN NEW GOVERNMENT TOURISM PLANS

The Beattie Government is taking action to secure Queensland’s tourism future by bringing the East down under.

Premier Peter Beattie today unveiled four new strategic action plans designed to boost tourism and expenditure from lucrative Asian markets.

Mr Beattie said the new long term plans for Japan, China, India and Korea would help guide the promotion of Queensland in these regions, increase airline capacity and develop market-ready tourism products.

Mr Beattie announced the new plans at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest tourism trade event, the 2007 Australian Tourism Exchange, being held in Brisbane this week.

He said it was clear these markets were vital to the future growth of Queensland’s second largest export industry.

“Significant consultation has been undertaken with local, state and federal tourism industries to identify what Eastern tourism markets that should be targeted by Queensland,” Mr Beattie said.

“As a result of the consultation the markets of India, China and Korea have been identified on a state and federal level as key emerging tourism markets.

“Japan, an already existing market, is currently entering a time of change but continues to deliver strong returns for Queensland.

“The plans will help drive growth and expenditure from these important markets.

“Cultivating these markets also offers diversification, which will help protect Queensland’s tourism industry from fluctuations in any single market.”

Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said the Beattie Government was dedicated to increasing visitor expenditure from China and India by up to 400 per cent over the next 10 years.

“We hope to double expenditure from Korea over the same period,” Mrs Keech said.

“The new Japan Market Strategy will embrace the changes we are seeing in this traditionally strong market and adapt Queensland’s tourism promotion and development to suit.

“We will continue to work closely with the industry to make sure the plans deliver comprehensive returns.”

Mrs Keech said the new strategic plans were part of the Queensland Government’s $48 million Queensland Tourism Strategy.

“Under the Queensland Tourism Strategy, we have partnered with industry to identify the international tourism markets which will play a major role in the future of our $18 billion tourism industry,” she said.

“The Beattie Government has supported these plans by funding the establishment of Tourism Queensland offices and staff in the respective countries.

“This presence ensures the Queensland Government can undertake strategic marketing and market development programs from a grass roots level.”

Australian Tourism Exchange 2007 is closed to the public and the 2,000 plus exhibitors, buyers and media have been officially certified by Tourism Australia in order to attend.
