Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
QUEENSLAND ICE-SKATERS TO LEARN FROM THE BEST: PREMIER
Five talented young Queensland ice skaters will have the chance to chase their Olympic dreams following today’s announcement by Premier Peter Beattie of $50,000 in funding to help establish the first Morgan Innes Scholarships in Queensland.
“State ice-skating champion Morgan Innes’ ambitions were tragically cut short when she was killed in a boating accident on Sydney Harbour in March,” Mr Beattie said.
“Through these new scholarships, this 14-year-old Queenslander’s incredible zest for life and her passion for figure skating will live on and inspire others,” he said.
The scholarships, to be awarded through the Morgan Innes Foundation and administered by Ice Skating Australia, will enable Queensland figure skaters to go abroad and learn from leading figure-skating trainers around the world.
Mr Beattie said the initiative was a tribute to Morgan – a two-time Queensland ice-skating champion – and he encouraged Queenslanders and Queensland businesses to dig deep to support the new scholarships.
“Morgan was a true competitor, a State champion who wanted to go all the way in the sport,” he said.
“While her young life was tragically taken on March 28 this year, there is now an opportunity for her memory and what she stood for to live on through these training scholarships that carry her name.
“They will give young Queenslanders the chance to travel and learn from the best as they work hard to realise their ice-skating dreams and compete at the elite level, even reach for Olympic gold.”
Accepting the $50,000 cheque on behalf of the Foundation today was Morgan’s family –father Robert, mother Kim and 11-year-old brother Curtis.
The Foundation plans to award up to five annual Queensland scholarships of $10,000 each, with the State Government’s one-off funding providing a major kick start to the initiative.
