Upgrade brings more rural rest-stops

Four new rest stops will be added to the Leichhardt Highway with a $5.2 million upgrade now underway.

A nine kilometre section of the highway south of Theodore is being widened and resurfaced.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas said the work is expected to be finished by September.

“This north-south link is a popular route for truckies and tourists – more places to pull over for a break will go along way in increasing road safety in the area.

Mr Lucas said driver fatigue has been identified as one of the biggest contributors to single vehicle crashes in rural Queensland.

It’s the third of five projects aimed at improving safety and reducing maintenance costs between Wowan and the Banana Shire boundary to the south of Theodore.

The first two stages, north of the Isla-Delusion Road intersection to south of the shire boundary, and south of Wowan a further 15km south to Blowhard Creek, were completed recently.
