DROUGHT AREA STUDENTS TO TAKE THE H2O CHALLENGE

State school students from South East Queensland’s parched Level 5 water restriction areas have been offered the opportunity to lead the way in the efficient use of water.

Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, today launched the H2O Challenge at Everton Park State School.

“This is a competition designed to encourage state school students to generate fresh and innovative ideas for the conservation of Queensland’s most precious resource – water,” Mr Welford said.

“The challenge is based on the Water Efficiency curriculum currently in place in state schools.

“Students will audit their school’s water usage and submit recommendations on how their school can further conserve water.

“I’m confident this competition will generate some great ideas, highlighting the passion and dedication of our students who are committed to the environment.”

Mr Welford said the H2O Challenge would give up to 500 state schools an opportunity to contribute their knowledge and strategies for improved water conservation.

“It’s inspiring to know that so many students and teachers will take this opportunity to suggest practical solutions so schools can further conserve our precious water resources.”

The H2O Challenge is open to students in Years 5 to 9 in groups of up to five, and schools can potentially win $5,000 to undertake the project outlined in their submission.

Two schools will each win the cash amount.

State schools in the following local council areas are eligible to take part in the challenge: Beaudesert Shire, Brisbane City, Caboolture Shire, Shire of Esk, Gatton Shire, Gold Coast City, Ipswich City, Kilcoy Shire, Laidley Shire, Logan City, Pine Rivers Shire and Redcliffe City.

The H2O Challenge closes Friday 3 August 2007.
