The Honourable John Mickel
Brisbane’s design scene is carving out a name for itself as a thriving creative centre.
And the industry will go on show next Saturday 26 May in a special one-day, whole-of-city event, promoting the best products, brands and identity in the Queensland design market.
Launching Brisbane Indesign today at the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Minister for State Development John Mickel said the inaugural event, modelled on successful Sydney and Melbourne events which drew several thousand guests each year, would cement Brisbane as one of Australia’s leading design hubs.
“Supported by the Queensland Government and organised by the Indesign Group, publishers of Indesign Magazine, the event will see showrooms and other design venues around the city open their doors to the design community, drawing crowds of architects, designers, developers and high-end manufacturers, as well as the general public, to see for themselves the design revolution that is happening in Brisbane,” Mr Mickel said.
“Over 60 design suppliers, exhibiting in 30 locations, including Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Newstead, Tenerife, West End, Woolloongabba and Petrie Terrace, and representing over 250 leading interior design brands are involved,” he said.
Mr Mickel said this first Brisbane showcase has attracted more pre-bookings than the first Sydney event and to make it easy to get around free buses will be available to transport guests between showrooms.
Two companies, The Laminex Group and Cafe Culture Australia, will come together to create a distinctive Laminex Garden, set amongst the glamour of a vodka and oyster lounge, to showcase their latest products, at Cafe Culture's Fortitude Valley showroom.
Laminex’s Queensland Marketing Manager Debbie Hudson said the company would showcase a range of products, including Finished Design Timber Veneers and Essa Stone.
“For example, Essa Stone has been created with new engineering technology and is composed from around 95 percent natural quartz, pigments and advance polymer resins and represents a welcome addition to the premium surfaces market,” Ms Hudson said.
“Cafe Culture will showcase products from Origlia Italy including the Stylish Venus chair range, new timber chairs and stools from PSM Italy, and Bontempi Italy coffee tables, chairs and stools.
“Featured furniture will be upholstered in exciting new vinyls and fabrics as well as some unique pieces that respect the environment,” she said.
Cafe Culture has been operating in the hospitality and commercial market for about eight years, importing products from Italy and working with Australian manufacturers to provide durable, functional products to the art and design and hospitality industries.
The Managing Director of the Indesign Group, Mr Raj Nandan, said the event was expected to draw well over 3000 members of the design community and general public.
“We have been working closely with the Department of State Development and Arts Queensland to promote design in Queensland, including Brisbane Indesign and other associated initiatives such as the inaugural Queensland New Design Exhibition and the design five campaign,” Mr Nandan said.
In association with Brisbane Indesign, the Queensland New Design Exhibition is currently on at Artisan, 381 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley to foster exposure for Queensland’s top emerging designers and their work and runs till June10.
Also being launched at Brisbane Indesign is the Queensland Government’s design five campaign, highlighting the work of five cutting-edge Queensland designers.
Mr Nandan said the five designers featured in the campaign provided a snapshot of where design was heading and proved that Queensland was a hothouse of design talent.
The five designers are: Alexander Lotersztain, Brian Steendyk, Marc Harrison, Paul Morris and Urban Art Projects.
Mr Mickel said design five recognised furniture and furnishings design in Queensland and provided just a taste of the outstanding design talent Queensland had to offer.
The five designers will feature in a special design five publication to be distributed free of charge to architects, specifiers, interior designers, manufacturers, design industry media and design-conscious consumers.
“The fact that Queensland is home to some of Australia’s most talented designers should be broadcast to the world. Our designers are rubbing shoulders with the best of the best of them in Milan, Tokyo, London, New York and Singapore.
“And Brisbane Indesign, design five and the Queensland New Design Exhibition are as much a celebration of the industry’s strength as an opportunity to promote Queensland’s rich creativity,” Mr Mickel said.
