SCHOOL NETBALL STARS COMPETE FOR STATE HONOURS

Around 240 school netball stars from across the state will compete in the Queensland School Sport Netball Championships at Toowoomba this weekend.

Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, said the 19-years-and-under and 15-years-and-under state championships would both be held from Friday 25 May to Monday 28 May at the Clive Berghofer facilities in Toowoomba.

“Around 120 girls will compete in each of the championships,” Mr Welford said.

“The students have been selected for their hard work, talent and skill, and I’d like to congratulate each competitor for this achievement and I wish them every success.

“The championships provide a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.”

All 12 of the school sporting regions will be represented—Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, North West, South West, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.

During each of the championships the teams will be divided into two pools, and matches will be played in a round robin format.

Mr Welford thanked the dedicated teachers and school staff who had worked hard to make the championships a success.

Following the championships, players will be selected to form a state team for each age group.

In August, the 15-years-and under team will represent Queensland at the School Sport Australia Netball Championships in Penrith. The under-19s will compete in an interstate competition with Victoria and New South Wales in Melbourne.
