Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
CELEBRATIONS SET FOR STATE EDUCATION WEEK
The great work being done in state schools will go from the classroom into the community as part of State Education Week, commencing on Monday 28 May.
Minister for Education and Training, Rod Welford, said schools are in the final stages of preparation for the jam-packed week of activities.
“Students, teachers and schools have so much to be proud of, and State Education Week provides a host of activities which give us the chance to experience and embrace those efforts,” Mr Welford said.
“Throughout the week, communities across the state will have the chance to learn what’s happening in their local schools through programs that reward achievements, showcase talents and highlight the many success stories of our state’s education system.”
Schools will host their own events, as well as participating in a variety of statewide programs, including:
-
Principal for a Day (Monday 28 May) which builds links between schools and local business and community leaders.
-
My Favourite Teacher competition, where students nominate teachers to be recognised for their hard work. Winners will be announced during the week.
-
Back to School Day (Tuesday 29 May), when former students can visit their old school.
-
Creative Generation (Thursday 31 May and Friday 1 June), a spectacular concert at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre featuring more than 550 performing arts students and professional artists.
Mr Welford said the tremendous efforts of schools and those working in them would also be promoted through the Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools, with regional recipients to be announced throughout the week.
“State Education Week, which has been a highlight on Queensland’s educational calendar for more than 15 years, has the theme this year of Creative Generation – celebrating excellence in state education,” he said.
“This acknowledges the role of students and teachers in developing our next creative generation.”
