JOINT STATEMENT
Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Minister for Tourism, Fair Trading, Wine Industry Development and Women
The Honourable Margaret Keech
2000 TOURISM DELEGATES TO VISIT QUEENSLAND
The Australian Tourism Exchange will boost Queensland’s economy by $10 million when it starts in Brisbane next week, Premier Peter Beattie and Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said today.
Mr Beattie said more than 2000 international and domestic delegates would soon begin arriving for the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest tourism trade show.
“This event will bring an immediate economic benefit of $10 million to the state but the potential economic impact from business done at the Exchange will be immeasurable,” Mr Beattie said.
“To have more than 725 of the world’s most economically influential tourism buyers and media in Queensland for this week is a major win for the state’s tourism industry.”
Mr Beattie said the event, being held in Brisbane from May 26 to June 1, would bring representatives from traditional markets such as the UK, Japan, Europe, Germany, New Zealand and the US as well as emerging markets such as China, India, Korea and the Middle East to Queensland.
“I’m pleased to announce that we will be holding Monday’s community cabinet meeting at the Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of the program,” he said.
“The Government has contributed more than $2 million towards ensuring Queensland secured this important event.
“It will be a major catalyst for future growth in the State’s $3.2 billion international holiday market - a market that provides job and income security for thousands of Queensland families.”
Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said an extensive program of 50 familiarisation tours before-and-after the event had also been organised.
“This will ensure delegates experience a true taste of Queensland,” she said.
“Seeing our great State for themselves will encourage travel agents and media to personally recommend Queensland as a destination to travelers.
“Tourism is Queensland’s second biggest export market, injecting more than $18 billion into the economy each year.
“ATE is an amazing opportunity for Queensland’s tourism industry to take centre stage and sell its products to the world.
“Queensland is always a real presence at this event – with more of our experiences and destinations on show than any other state.
“This year is no exception. We have nine regional tourism organisations represented here, a record number.
“We will be working tirelessly with industry during the event to ensure Queensland receives a major share of Australia’s international tourism expenditure.”
