Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Community groups urged to apply for multicultural grants

Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today encouraged Queensland residents and community groups to apply for a slice of the State Government’s $730,000 Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP) grants.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the grants were for community events and projects that enhanced multiculturalism in the community.

“The MAP funds projects, festivals and special events that promote an understanding of multiculturalism, reduce prejudice and foster community participation at a local level in Queensland,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Grants of up to $30,000 are available to not-for-profit community organisations on a one-off basis to carry out innovative multicultural community projects with the potential to develop community relations.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said as Queensland grew in cultural diversity it was important all communities worked together to achieve mutual respect and understanding of different cultures and religions.

“In previous years, the MAP has funded many multicultural projects, festivals and special events such as the Townsville Cultural Fest, Paniyiri Greek Festival and the Woodford Folklines Multicultural Program.

“Events and programs like these bring the community together and increase understanding through cultural experience and community participation.”

The MAP is part of the Queensland Government’s Multicultural Queensland – making a world of difference policy that supports diversity and harmony within the Smart State.

Applications for 2007/08 MAP grant funding close on 31 July 2007.
