$820,000 power boost for booming Coomera – Hope Island

Work is underway on an $820,000 upgrade to the electricity network in the Coomera, Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island areas.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the upgrade would include installing new underground power cables between Hope Island/Sanctuary Cove and Coomera Waters.

“The project includes establishing a new cable under the Coomera River,” Mr Wilson said.

“Upgrades will also take place at two other sites in Coomera.

“Collectively, the new cables will link the Hope Island and Coomera substations to the existing power network,” Mr Wilson said.

Member for Broadwater Peta Kaye Croft said the cables would provide increased capacity in the local network.

“The upgrades will make sure the local network keeps pace with current and future growth in the area,” Mrs Croft said.

“Importantly Energex technicians will have greater options available when restoring power faster should unexpected power interruptions occur such as storm damage.

“The Gold Coast is a boom area.

“In the past two years the Energex has spent more than $200 million upgrading the region’s electricity network,” she said.

Energex is spending $643 million this year on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network.

Energex supplies electricity to around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland.

The company’s distribution area of 25,000 square kilometres includes almost 50,000km of underground and overhead electricity lines and cables, over half a million power poles, some 40,000 transformers and more than 260,000 street lights.
