CONSTRUCTION OF NEW $4.3 MILLION HOUSING COMPLEX FINISHED

Housing Minister Robert Schwarten today announced that the construction of a $4.3 million Department of Housing unit complex in Maroochydore was finished and would soon start accepting tenants.

Mr Schwarten said the complex of 16 units in Yinni Street had been constructed to house senior citizens.

“Like many others in the community, senior citizens in the community have been forced out of the private rental market because of skyrocketing rents on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Schwarten said

“It is for this reason that the Department of Housing aims to increase the availability of accommodation that is appropriately designed, affordable, secure and well-located for these people,” he said.

“The location of this new complex ensures tenants will be close to support networks and services such as transport, shops and medical centres.”

The purpose-built complex includes eight one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom seniors units with all eight ground-floor units built to adaptable or semi-adaptable housing standards.

“A dwelling designed using adaptable housing standards can be easily modified in the future to suit the widest possible range of occupants’ physical needs as a result of ageing or disabilities,” Mr Schwarten said.

“Using adaptable design for new construction projects is a smart initiative of the State Government to reduce the long-term costs of providing housing for all Queenslanders.

“Each unit will be self-contained with a kitchen, bathroom, laundry, clothesline and private patio. There are fourteen covered car parking spaces with six of these designed to meet the needs of clients with wheelchair accessibility requirements.”

“This housing development demonstrates the State Government’s strong commitment to social housing in the Maroochydore electorate which has seen more than $48.086 million spent on housing and housing related services in the area since 1998.”

The construction was funded by the Australian Government and the Queensland Government through the Commonwealth State Housing Agreement.
