Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
JOBSEEKERS BUILD SKILLS IN SARINA PARK RENOVATION
Ten Sarina residents involved in a Skilling Queenslanders for Work project will graduate tomorrow with boosted confidence and construction skills, after upgrading their town’s Central Park.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Sarina Shire Council co-ordinated the project which was aimed at assisting the 10 long-term unemployed participants into the workforce.
“Participants have been paid to revitalise the park during the past 16 weeks, undertaking new construction, plantings and maintenance work, as well as studying modules from the Certificate II in Basic Construction.
“Training in job-search techniques was also incorporated into the program, and I am pleased five of the participants have succeeded in gaining full-time employment with Sarina Shire Council,” said Mr Mickel.
Sarina Shire Council CEO Sandra Cannon said this initiative has been beneficial for the community and the participants.
“Landscaping throughout the park has been improved, and a number of new amenities constructed, including a picnic shelter, low walls, pathways and seating.
“The Council is also very happy to welcome five of the participants into its divisions of Construction, Roads Maintenance, and Parks and Gardens,” said Ms Cannon.
Sarina Shire Council acknowledges funding contributions of $129,630 from the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations and $93,000 from the State Government security improvement program.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
121,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
