Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
NEW ARTS FUNDING PROGRAM TO FAN INNOVATION AND RENEWAL
The Beattie Government has announced a new funding program for small to medium arts organisations to further strengthen and develop this vibrant component of the arts industry.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said funding for Queensland’s small to medium arts sector had been restructured under the program.
“Our Government recognises the vitality of the small to medium arts sector as the engine room for innovation, creativity and new ways of engaging communities,” Mr Welford said.
“However the current funding arrangements are unsustainable as they leave no room for new organisations to be supported and no flexibility to address emerging opportunities and priorities.
“These new funding arrangements will support the entry of new organisations, encourage innovation and renewal and address gaps and duplications in arts and cultural programs and services across the State.”
Mr Welford said the small to medium organisations program, S2M, would replace the current Cultural Infrastructure Program (CIP) from next year.
“Under S2M, the Government will maintain its overall annual funding of $9.6 million,” he said.
“S2M is an integral part of the significant reforms introduced by our Government, in consultation with industry, over the past 12 months.
Mr Welford said there would be two categories of funding – annual as well as the traditional triennial funding.
“While fewer organisations will receive triennial funding, some will receive annual funding or they will be eligible to apply for project funding,” he said.
“The introduction of S2M signals a commitment to work with the sector to create a balance of diverse organisations across the state able to provide Queenslanders with greater access to arts and cultural activities.”
The S2M guidelines and application form are available online at: www.arts.qld.gov.au.
Arts Queensland will meet with existing CIP clients to discuss the new funding arrangements. Applications close 31 July 2007.
