Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

The Ingham community will come together to eat, drink and celebrate Italian culture at the 13th Australian-Italian Festival on 18-20 May 2007.

Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ) provided a $15,000 grant for the festival, which showcases the passion and vibrancy of Italian culture, heritage and traditions in the community.

“This grant was provided under the State Government’s Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP),” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The Australian-Italian Festival is one of six major established festivals that will share in $100,000 of MAP funding this year.

“This event has received a total of $45,000 since 2005 as part of a three-year Beattie Government funding commitment.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the MAP offered grants to community organisations for projects, festivals and events that promoted an understanding of multiculturalism, reduced prejudice and fostered community participation in Queensland.

“The Australian-Italian Festival is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate diversity in the community.

“Events like this are a great way to bring the community together and increase understanding through cultural experience and community participation.”

The 2007 festival program includes the great toga race, a pizza and spaghetti eating competition, cultural parade, hair and fashion design awards and much more.

Festival Director Jane Clark said the Ingham community had a strong Italian cultural influence with 60 per cent of residents of Italian heritage.

“We have festival fever and everyone is invited to come eat, drink and celebrate our community’s unique cultural heritage,” Ms Clark said.

The 13th Annual Australian-Italian Festival will be held from 18-20 May 2007 at Lannercost Street, Ingham.
