JOINT STATEMENT
Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
NEW SHAILER PARK MIDDLE SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED
A new middle school at Shailer Park, south of Brisbane, is helping to revolutionise the way students make the transition from primary school to secondary school.
Premier Peter Beattie, who officially opened the Shailer Park Middle School, said
the $1.66 million project had been funded through the State Government’s Smart School Renewal Program.
“Our Government is committed to investing in education to realise its vision of a Smart State,” Mr Beattie said.
“We want to give children in the crucial middle years the best chance of success.
“This dedicated middle school will help teachers to keep students in Years 5 to 9 interested, progressing and succeeding in their learning.”
Mr Beattie said the purpose-designed building provided a challenging and flexible learning environment.
“The classrooms are fitted with a wireless network to enable students to access information from anywhere in the school,” he said. “The building also houses a dance studio and computer laboratory.
“This will help to keep students switched on to learning which is a key priority for our Government.”
Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, said the Government’s Middle Phase of Learning State School Action Plan acknowledged how vital the middle years of schooling were to a child’s future.
“The plan provides strategies such as reducing student class numbers and strengthening school clusters to ensure consistent curriculum delivery,” Mr Welford said.
“The strategies are progressively being introduced in state schools such as Shailer Park.
“This joint project between Shailer Park’s state and high schools aims to inspire young people to keep learning and to pave the way for a smooth transition between primary and secondary school.
“It also fits in with the Shailer Park schools’ theme of creating brighter futures.”
State Member for Springwood Barbara Stone said Shailer Park’s 120 Year 7 and 8 students would use the middle school facilities, while students from all years would share the performance area.
“Community members will have after-hours access to the middle school’s dance studio and computer laboratory,” Ms Stone said.
“The new middle school is a real boost for Shailer Park students making the transition from primary school to secondary school.
“The new technology that has been incorporated into the building will become second nature to the students and give them an important head start for future study and employment opportunities,” Ms Stone said.
