Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
LAST CHANCE TO ENTER 2007 QUEENSLAND PREMIER’S LITERARY AWARDS
Queensland writers are being urged to submit their entries in this year’s Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards. Entries for the prestigious awards close on Friday May 25.
Premier Peter Beattie says the 2007 Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards are open to writers across the country and offer total prize money of $225 000 in 14 categories.
“All aspiring and established writers of fiction, history, science, poetry or short stories should enter before nominations close later this month,” Mr Beattie said.
“This year I want to particularly urge as many writers as possible to enter the Unpublished Indigenous Writer – The David Unaipon Award.
“The winning Indigenous writer will have their work published and receive $15 000 in prize money.
“In all there are 14 prize categories and they offer new and established writers alike the opportunity to have their work widely recognised and publicised,” Mr Beattie said.
Karen Foxlee, who was awarded the 2006 Emerging Queensland Author Award for The Anatomy of Wings, finished her manuscript only two days before the close of entries for last year’s awards.
“I stopped and started writing The Anatomy of Wings countless times and various parts of the story can be found in numerous incarnations in drawers and floppy disks around my house,” Karen said.
“I knew I wouldn’t be able to move on until I finished it, so I started seriously writing at the end of 2004 and finished it two days before the closing deadline for the 2006 awards.
“It took a lot of courage to send my manuscript off to an awards program like this.”
Fortunately Karen entered her work and The Anatomy of Wings went on to win the Emerging Queensland Author Award at the 2006 Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards.
For her debut manuscript, Karen was awarded $20 000 in prize money, and her book will be published in September by the University of Queensland Press.
“I couldn’t believe it when I first found out I had won the award,” Karen said. “I was so honoured to be in the company of other writers who had won in previous years - Patrick Holland, Steven Lang, Kimberley Starr, Nicole Bourke to name a few.
“I loved the process of working with an editor from the University of Queensland Press, getting feedback, solving problems and having the opportunity to further improve the manuscript.
“The prize money is also very helpful and has allowed me to concentrate more on my writing.”
