SCHOOL FOOTBALL STARS VIE FOR STATE HONOURS

More than 160 budding Socceroos from all over the state will converge on Townsville later this week for the Queensland School Sport 19 years-and-under Football State Championships.

Education Minister, Rod Welford, said the rising football stars had been selected from thousands of hopefuls to compete at the three-day event.

“Teams will contest the championships at the Murray Junior Football Club from Thursday 17 May until Saturday 20 May,” Mr Welford said.

"I want to congratulate each of these young men on their selection, and wish them every success on the field.”

Ten sporting regions will be represented at this year's championships - Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.

“Teams will be divided into two pools, and matches will be played in a round-robin format, with the top two teams progressing to the final to battle it out for state honours,” Mr Welford said.

"It's a great achievement and a wonderful opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.

"I would also like to thank our dedicated teachers and school staff, as well as the billeting families, who have given considerable time and effort to make the championships a success."

At the conclusion of the event, 16 students will be selected to represent Queensland at the School Sport Australia 19 years-and-under Football Championships to be held in Darwin in August.
