SCHOOL AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL STARS VIE FOR STATE HONOURS
More than 230 rising football stars from across the state will compete in the Queensland School Sport 15 years-and-under Australian Football Championships in Brisbane commencing later this week.
Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, said the Sherwood Australian Football Club in Chelmer would host the competition from Thursday 17 May to Sunday 20 May.
“I’d like to congratulate each of these young athletes on their achievements, and wish them every success at the four-day event," Mr Welford said.
“The competitors have all been selected for their hard work, talent and skill.
“This event provides a great opportunity for these young footballers to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.
“I have no doubt some of these students will follow the footsteps of 75 former competitors who have gone on to have successful careers in the AFL, such as Michael Voss and Nick Riewolt.”
Nine sporting regions will be represented at the championships—Metropolitan East, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Peninsula, Capricornia, Wide Bay, Darling Downs, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.
“There is also a special President’s Team which is made up of students from the Northern sporting region and players selected from other regions,” Mr Welford said.
“Teams will be divided into two pools and the competition will be played in round-robin format, with the finals contested on the final day.”
Following the championships, 25 students will be selected to represent Queensland at the School Sport Australia National Australian Football Championships in Sydney in July.
