BIG SOUTH CAROLINA DELEGATION SET FOR BRISBANE TRADE SHOWS

A big trade delegation from South Carolina is expected to participate in two large trade shows being staged in Brisbane in October.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said the Sister State relationship with South Carolina had expanded to a new level during his recent trade mission to the State.

“Our investment of time and effort is paying off handsomely,” Mr Beattie said.

“Queensland has now developed strong personal, business and research links with colleagues in South Carolina and the enthusiasm for doing business with Queensland is stronger than ever before.

“The October trade mission to Queensland will be led by South Carolina’s Secretary of Commerce Joe Taylor.

“The South Carolina Department of Commerce is promoting heavily the State’s first trade mission to Australia from 20-26 October. It is intended that the mission will coincide with AusBio 2007 and Export Week 2007 which are being held in Brisbane at that time.

“Not surprisingly the trade mission will have a strong focus on biotechnology and research collaboration between Queensland and South Carolina universities, but there will also be an emphasis on other business opportunities, education, ports development and commodities.

“The trade mission is being promoted in South Carolina as an excellent opportunity to visit South Carolina’s sister state and my recent visit helped generate additional interest,” Mr Beattie said.

The Sister State Friendship Agreement was signed on 13 May 1999.

Over the life of the agreement six Memoranda of Understanding have been signed. These cover areas such as economic cooperation, tourism and tourism student exchanges, education and educational media, and biotechnology.

Many other collaborative projects have been initiated to promote educational, scientific, commercial, tourism and cultural activities.

“The agreement has opened many doors for Queensland business. For example Ballandean Estate Wines selling wines into the US market through a distribution arrangement with a South Carolina firm,” Mr Beattie said.

“South Carolina is also a major user of another Smart State initiative – the Positive Parenting Program – which is now being used in 20 counties to help parents build better relationships with their children.
