Queensland Cricketing Talent Unearthed
The Minister for Sport Andrew Fraser today announced the inclusion of 21 young cricket stars into the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Regional Training Program squad for 2007/2008.
Mr Fraser said the young hopefuls were handpicked from cricket trials that were conducted throughout the regions of Queensland earlier this year.
“Ten athletes secured their positions for a consecutive year whilst eleven new athletes earned scholarships,” Mr Fraser said.
“The 21 athletes will receive a one year scholarship with the QAS Regional Cricket Training program.
“I’m sure they’ll benefit under the guidance of new QAS Executive Director Bennett King - a former coach of the Queensland Bulls and West Indies cricket teams.”
Around 100 cricketers were invited to display their talent in front of selectors including QAS Head Cricket Coach and former Queensland representative Trevor Barsby and QAS Regional Cricket Coach Vic Williams.
Mr Fraser said the cricket trials were held in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone, Maryborough and Toowoomba.
“These talented cricketers will be provided with state-of-the-art coaching and participate in skill development camps,” Mr Fraser said.
“The first camp will be held in Townsville from 30 June until 4 July and will be conducted by Trevor Barsby and Vic Williams with guest appearance by Queensland Cricket Player Development Manager, Joe Dawes.”
Mr Fraser said the athletes would undergo additional support in the areas of career and education guidance, sport science, sport medicine and finance.
“The athletes will also be exposed to high level competition including the Institute Challenge Series and Cricket Australia Cup and matches against sides touring through Queensland such as Papua New Guinea,” he said.
