CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE TO OVERCOME SKILL SHORTAGE

A Centre for Excellence in Project Management will increase the number of skilled project managers available to Queensland’s growing building and construction industry, Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten announced today.

Mr Schwarten said a Memorandum of Understanding had been signed by the Department of Public Works, the Department of Education and Training and the Australian Institute of Project Management.

“This joint initiative between the Government and industry will play a vital role in fostering project management excellence throughout Queensland,” Mr Schwarten said.

“Over the past two decades, the building and construction industry in Queensland and Australia has experienced a significant decline in the quality of project design documentation.

“The Centre for Excellence, to be located at the Southbank Institute of Technology, will offer a two-year employment-based program to improve the standard and numbers of the project managers in Queensland.

“The program will allow on-the-job application of the theories and practices of project management and provide a workplace mentoring program.”

Minister for Education and Training, Rod Welford, said the project was another example of industry and government working together to solve the skills shortage.

“This project demonstrates the way in which Queensland’s vocational and education training sector is responding to industry needs,” he said.

The Centre for Excellence in Project Management will have a full-time designated Program Manager at the Southbank Institute of Technology.

An initial intake of 20 participants will start the program in the first half of 2007, followed by another 20 in late 2007. In early 2008, a further 20 will complete the maximum of 60 participants in the program at any one time.

After successful completion of the program, participants will be eligible to register as project managers through the Australian Institute of Management.
