Conference highlights importance of a child’s early years
The importance of investing in a child’s early years will be discussed at a one-day conference for child care professionals in Brisbane tomorrow.
The Playgroup Association of Queensland will stage the Early Intervention through Playgroups Conference, to be attended by community and government representatives, with financial support from the Department of Communities.
Communities and Youth Minister Warren Pitt said the conference would provide valuable training and networking opportunities for those working in early childhood and family support program and policy development.
Member for Mudgeeraba Di Reilly will officially open the conference on behalf of Mr Pitt.
“The Queensland Government is committed to building strong communities and I am happy to support Playgroup Queensland’s work with children under the age of five and their families,” Mr Pitt said.
“The importance of providing a stable, healthy and happy environment for young Queenslanders should not be underestimated. I believe it is far better to invest in a child’s early years through innovative and relevant prevention and early intervention strategies, rather than fund costly solutions to more complex problems later in life.”
The Queensland Government is currently developing and implementing various initiatives to support families and children aged up to eight, with significant funding being spent on Referral for Active Intervention programs, Safe Havens, Early Years Centres and supported playgroups.
The Department of Communities is a major supporter of Playgroup Queensland, with more than $800,000 allocated earlier this year for the organisation to provide an extra 45 supported playgroups throughout Queensland.
“By developing strong working relationships between community and government organisations, we can ensure that children are nurtured and safe and have every opportunity to reach their full potential,” Mrs Reilly said.
