HARVARD EXPERTISE TO GUIDE SPRINGFIELD HEALTH AND EDUCATION HUB

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS: Queensland Premier Peter Beattie today endorsed the collaboration between Springfield Land Corporation) and Harvard Medical International on their plans to establish a world’s best practice health centre in south east Queensland.

“Springfield Land Corporation is securing the expertise of world and local health care leaders to advise on planning an integrated health services and education hub for south east Queensland’s rapidly growing western corridor,” Mr Beattie said.

Springfield Health City will occupy about 50 hectares adjacent to Greater Springfield’s CBD. It’s expected that the Greater Springfield region will be home to 85,000 people by 2026.

During his visit to BIO2007 in Boston, the Premier attended a briefing session on progress on the agreement.

“It’s expected that a comprehensive strategy will be developed by October, 2007, enabling construction of Stage One to begin in 2008,” Mr Beattie said.

Springfield Land Corporation director David Henry said the model would be unique to Australia and include specialist medical services, aged care retirement facilities, respite and health services.

“Harvard Medical International, an affiliate of the famous university, provides advice on the establishment of health care centres of all kinds throughout the world,” Mr Henry said.

“Harvard Medical International will work with the Queensland Government, the three local universities interested in Springfield Health City (The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and University of Southern Queensland) and many other stakeholders through to November, 2007.”

Mr Beattie said Harvard Medical International experts would collaborate closely with the three universities to develop training programs for medical and allied health workers.

A strategy will also be developed which may deliver Australia’s first private university hospital along the lines of those operating in the United States.

“It’s expected that a comprehensive strategy will be developed by October 2007, enabling construction of Stage One to begin in 2008,” Mr Beattie said.
