The Honourable Margaret Keech
TIGER POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR QUEENSLAND
The introduction of Tiger Airways to the Australian airline market would be a positive outcome for residents and Queensland’s $18 billion tourism industry, Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said today.
Mrs Keech said Tiger would be placing a large focus on the leisure market segment.
“Queensland is Australia’s dominant leisure destination and we expect the airline will be directing considerable flights into Queensland destinations,” she said.
“We expect destinations such as the Gold Coast and other top holiday spots to benefit.
“Tiger deciding to make Melbourne its base is not surprising but does not mean Queensland will not be a major beneficiary when the airline flies in.
“Melbourne is one of Queensland’s key domestic tourism markets and having Tiger established there will provide further opportunities for increased access from Victoria.
“Introduction of the airline will most certainly grow Queensland’s domestic tourism market, driving more competitive pricing and capacity.
“The company will also provide strong future opportunities for increasing aviation access to and from Queensland and South-East Asia.”
Mrs Keech said the Beattie Government would continue to discuss potential routes in Queensland with the airline.
