The Honourable Rod Welford
SCHOOL SQUASH STARS COMPETE FOR STATE HONOURS
More than 150 school squash stars from across the state will compete in the Queensland School Sport Squash Championships at Wynnum from tomorrow (3-6 May).
Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, said the Wynnum West Squash Courts would host the 15 years and under, and the 19 years and under state championships.
“I’d like to congratulate each competitor on his or her achievement, and wish them every success at the championships," Mr Welford said.
“The competitors have all been selected for their hard work, talent and skill.
“This event provides a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.
“I have no doubt some of these students will follow the success of former competitors such as the 1992 junior and open champions Natalie and Rachel Grinham who went on to become the 2006 Commonwealth Games Women’s champion and runner-up.”
The four-day championships at the Wynnum West Squash Centre from 3-6 May will include singles and doubles tournaments.
Ten sporting regions will be represented—Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.
Mr Welford thanked the dedicated teachers and school staff who had worked hard to make the championships a success.
Following the championships 20 students will be selected to represent Queensland at the National Squash Exchange against New South Wales in Caloundra in August.
