Spence unveils Australia's most secure cars
Police Minister Judy Spence and Commissioner Bob Atkinson have praised car manufacturers for their efforts in the fight against car theft.
Ms Spence today announced the vehicles chosen by the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council as having the best anti-theft measures in place in their class.
“Through the good work of Queensland police, the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council and car manufacturers there’s been a 58 per cent decline in the number of vehicle thefts in Queensland in the last five years, and an average of almost 50 per cent nationally,” Ms Spence said.
“The net benefit to the community from that reduction is between $62 million and $1.4 billion nationally.
“The council is a joint initiative of Australian governments and the insurance industry and is committed to developing strategies to reduce car theft,” Ms Spence said
“One of its objectives is to encourage motor vehicle manufacturers to incorporate more security technology to counteract theft,” Ms Spence said.
The council assessed each winner against their competitors for the quality of their entry systems, theft resistance systems and for vehicle identification standards.
The winners in each category were:
Small Car Class: Volkswagen Polo 5-door hatch and the Citroen C2, 3-door hatch. (Joint winners)
Medium Car Class: Subaru Liberty 2.0 R
Large Car Class: Mitsubishi 380 LX Sedan
Luxury Car Class: Audi A8.
Compact SUV Class: BMW X3, 3.0i 5-door wagon.
Large SUV Class: Audi Q7, 5-door wagon.
People Mover Class: The Volkswagen Multivan
Commercial Vehicle Class: Volkswagen Caddy Cargo Van.
Commissioner Atkinson welcomed the council’s continuing push to educate both vehicle manufacturers and owners about car security.
“I am certain the motoring public will welcome being given a greater range of security options in their vehicles and I encourage the Council to continue to press for improvements in this area of vehicle design,” Mr Atkinson said
