PROPERTY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS SUPPORT FOR NURSERIES

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries will appoint a new Farm Management Systems officer to support production nurseries in north Queensland.

Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin announced the appointment today at the official launch and certification ceremony for the production nurseries Environmental Management System known as EcoHort.

“Under the combined FMS program, businesses critically evaluate each component of their enterprise and identify areas of concern,’’ Mr Mulherin said.

“A systematic approach is then adopted to ensure that the areas requiring improvement are addressed and are continually reviewed.

“Through the Property Management Systems Initiative, the Nursery and Garden Industry Queensland sought to build on existing partnership arrangements with DPI&F to extend the program into northern Queensland.

“It is now expected that in the state’s north a further 90 businesses will develop action plans and 60 businesses will achieve formal accreditation under the industry’s Farm Management Systems program.”

Mr Mulherin the announcement signalled the second appointment under the Property Management Systems Initiative.

A Dairying Better ’N’ Better for Tomorrow officer were announced in mid-April.

“Negotiations are continuing between DPI&F and other industry and regional natural resource management groups on further projects under this Initiative.

“I expect to announce other successful projects in the coming weeks with further announcements during 2007.

“The Initiative involves the appointment of DPI&F staff to work with industry and regional natural resource management groups on rolling out property management systems and related approaches.

“The Property Management Systems Initiative is a major step-forward in enhancing DPI&F’s extension effort through closer relationships with industry.

“It also represents a major step in achieving improved environmental outcomes from industries that contribute more than $11 billion annually to the Queensland economy.”
