New rugby union complex opens in Sunnybank: Fraser
The standard of facilities for junior rugby players has improved thanks to funding from the State Government.
The Biggs Rugby Complex at Sunnybank was officially opened today by Sport Minister Andrew Fraser and Police Minister and Member for Mount Gravatt Judy Spence.
Mr Fraser said the new facilitywill enhance the quality of the game and help rugby clubs retain their junior players.
“The club is not only supporting the sport of union, but providing an important service to the community, and the Queensland Government is proud to be able to support it,” Mr Fraser said.
“Rugby is a fantastic participation sport for young people. It offers an opportunity to get out in the fresh air, get active and meet new friends.
“If we keep supporting local clubs with funding for improved facilities, it will make it easier to identify the stars of tomorrow.”
Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Member for Mount Gravatt Judy Spence said the new complex would be a real asset to the community in Sunnybank and the surrounding districts.
“The Queensland Government provided the club with $772,604 in funding towards the construction of a rugby field incorporating irrigation and lighting, and to construct a club house incorporating change rooms and amenities,” Ms Spence said.
“The new complex will also allow the club to support a range of other sporting and community activities.
“These will include junior and senior training and games, QRU-sanctioned championships and carnivals, school sports including rugby, rugby league and other sports such as cricket, as well as general community recreation activities.
“The Sunnybank Junior Rugby Club has enjoyed strong growth in recent years with participation numbers steadily increasing from 425 players in 2005 to 615 now.”
