Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology
The Honourable Robert Schwarten
Public Works Minister, Robert Schwarten has announced today that the Cambooya and Greenmount War Memorials will receive some much needed repairs,
Minister Schwarten says the Cambooya and Greenmount memorials are important to the historic fabric of the Toowoomba region.
“The soldier statue and sandstone cenotaph are typical of the memorials erected after World War One to honour those who never returned home. They have been a place of mourning for loved ones and in later years, a focal point for commemoration events like ANZAC and Remembrance Day,” Mr Schwarten said.
“Like many memorials across Queensland, age and exposure are taking their toll, so it’s important that work is undertaken to ensure these reminders of service and sacrifice are there for future generations.
“The Government understands that regional councils and community organisations face budgetary constraints when it comes to these sorts of restoration projects, so we’re pleased to partner with the Cambooya Shire Council to restore these beautiful memorials” he said.
Mr Schwarten said the Government will provide a $6,200 dollar for dollar grant to Cambooya Shire Council to carry out the repairs through the Queensland Government’s Community Memorials Restoration Program.
The Cambooya Cenotaph and the Greenmount soldier statue were erected in the early 1920’s to honour those from the region who died during World War One. The grant will help fund work including cleaning and sealing the sandstone and concrete, repairing cracks, re-leading missing letters and upgrading flagpoles.
“The Government understands that regional councils and community organisations face budgetary constraints when it comes to these sorts of restoration projects, so we’re pleased to partner with the Cambooya Shire Council to restore these beautiful memorials” he said.
The Community Memorials Restoration Program, now in its third year, has provided almost $1,157,300 in dollar-for-dollar subsidies to councils and community organisations to help restore historic monuments and other local icons around the State.
