The Honourable Robert Schwarten
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten has announced today that the Talwood’s War Memorial will receive a facelift. .
The Queensland Government will provide a $3,125 dollar-for-dollar subsidy to the Waggamba Shire Council to carry clean, repair and repaint the memorial and surrounds through a subsidy from the Community Memorials Restoration Program.
The Talwood War Memorial, originally built in the 1950s, was upgraded in the 1970s to further acknowledge service personnel who served in Vietnam.
Minister Schwarten said the Talwood War Memorial formed a focal point for the community’s commemorative activities.
“Servicemen and women from our regional towns made tremendous sacrifices in times of conflict, often resulting in devastating impacts on their small communities,” Mr Schwarten said.
“Monuments like Talwood’s play a pivotal role in Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies which are attracting more and more people each year.
“So it is important to maintain these monuments for future generations,” Mr Schwarten said.
As part of the project, the honour roll name plaques will be removed and taken to Toowoomba for professional restoration. The fence and entrance arch will also be repainted and the concrete surrounds repaired.
“The Government understands that local authorities and community organisations can face budgetary constraints in these projects, so we’re pleased to partner with the Waggamba Shire Council to enhance this memorial,” he said.
The Community Memorials Restoration Program, now in its third year, has provided nearly $1,157,300 in dollar-for-dollar subsidies to councils and community organisations to help restore historic monuments and other local icons around the State.
