Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
MANUFACTURING MAKES FOR A HIGH-FLYING CAREER
The sky is the limit for young people wanting to take up a career in the manufacturing sector – that’s the message the Queensland Government will be sending to high school students over the coming months.
Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel, who opened the Brisbane Careers and Employment Expo today, said the ’Create It Make It Live It’ advertising campaign was designed to boost the image and profile of manufacturing to high school students between 15-17 years.
“We want to address negative perceptions among young people that the manufacturing industry is not an exciting career for them to pursue,” Mr Mickel said.
“Skilled workers are in high demand in manufacturing. The sector is the largest employer of full-time workers and contributes more than $16 billion to Queensland’s economy,” he said.
“Queensland is going to be the powerhouse for some of the world’s most important industries of the future – like aviation, boatbuilding, biotechnology, engineering and electronics.
“For young people who want a career that’s well paid and well rewarded it’s a great time to get into manufacturing.”
Mr Mickel said ‘Create It Make It Live It’ would be showcased at the Department of State Development’s stand at this year’s expo being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre until Sunday.
This year the Brisbane expo boasts more than 180 exhibitors including leading employers, education and training providers. More than 35,000 students and prospective jobseekers are expected to visit the expo this year.
“But of course manufacturing’s only one aspect of this exciting expo. Given the host of outstanding employers here today, if you can’t find a job that interests you, then I’m sure it doesn’t yet exist,” Mr Mickel said.
