Improved access to justice for Toowoomba residents

Toowoomba residents now have easier access to justice, with Legal Aid Queensland’s office relocating to a bigger and more central location in Hume Street.

The new office on the first floor of 154 Hume Street was officially opened today by Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine today.

Mr Shine said the new office reflected Legal Aid Queensland’s commitment to enhancing access to justice for the residents of the Toowoomba region.

“Legal Aid Queensland continually strives to ensure Queenslanders have access to legal services, no matter where they live,” Mr Shine said.

“The new office in Hume Street is a reflection of the ongoing commitment of both Legal Aid and the Queensland Government to meet the needs of regional communities.”

“Its location on the first floor of 154 Hume Street in the centre of the court district will be convenient for both staff and clients. The new office is located close to the city’s courts and police station and offering ample off-street parking.”

“Legal Aid Toowoomba offers a diverse range of services – from duty lawyers at the local courts through to outreach services for neighbouring communities.’

In 2005-06, Toowoomba staff provided 2539 legal advice sessions and funded 1657 cases.

“For those people who can’t visit the office, they should use Legal Aid’s telephone advice service which allows anyone to get free legal information and advice by calling 1300 65 11 88,” Mr Shine said.

Legal Aid Queensland provides information, advice and representation in family, civil and criminal law matters.

At the opening, Mr Shine also paid tribute to law firms in the region for their commitment to legal aid services and disadvantaged clients.

“Toowoomba is fortunate to have community minded law firms dedicated to ensuring as many people as possible have access to justice,” Mr Shine said.
