BOWEN IRRIGATORS GET ADVICE ON IMPROVING WATER MANAGEMENT

Bowen irrigators will meet with the Department of Natural Resources and Water (NRW) this week to discuss the importance of responsible water management, Water Minister Craig Wallace announced today.

Mr Wallace said NRW’s visit to Bowen was part of an overall program.

“Each year we visit the area and provide irrigators with information about ways they can improve their water management,” Mr Wallace said.

“This year we will be checking out progress in those areas and discussing additional ways to manage one of our most valuable natural resources.”

NRW regional compliance manager Greg Bauman said: “As always we are happy to discuss specific water licence conditions and concerns, and will be looking to answer any questions individual irrigators might have."

Mr Bauman said one of the main issues to highlight during the visit was continued responsible water use, after a recent boost to aquifer levels throughout the Bowen area.

Mr Wallace said: "Irrigators in the Bowen area now have access to increased water entitlements for the 2007-2008 water year after a substantial re-charge to groundwater aquifers in the area.

"This is good news, but it does not mean that we can start exceeding entitlements or using water less responsibly,” he said.

"No-one knows what the next wet season will bring, so it's a good idea to keep thinking about sustainability whenever we can."

Mr Bauman said licensees also needed to continue to be mindful of the needs and rights of other consumptive and non-consumptive water users.

“Our awareness program aims to educate people about the importance of managing and using water for a sustainable future,” Mr Bauman said.

“It's about ensuring everyone has the same access to our natural resources - giving everyone a fair go.”
