QUEENSLAND FINE FOOD PRODUCTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Minister for State Development John Mickel today urged Queensland’s chefs to continue to embrace the local growing gourmet food sector.

His comments come ahead of tonight’s exclusive showcase of Queensland fine food products and awards ceremony for the Chefs of Queensland Cultural Culinary Challenge 2007.

“My Department organised the showcase to give Queensland food companies a unique opportunity to meet with our leading chefs,” Mr Mickel said.

“Twenty-five quality food manufacturers will promote and present samples of their products which will help them build their food service networks and relationships.

“Products on display and available for tasting tonight include goat bacon and salami, liquored ice cream, gourmet pastas, herbs, preserves, sauces, oils, dips, pate and biscuits.

“This small sample demonstrates that Queensland has a great deal to offer. We’ve long had a reputation for our quality beef, seafood, fruit and vegetables but now we’re also making a name for ourselves as a manufacturer of fine and speciality lines.”

Mr Mickel said the Culinary Challenge was held annually and organised by the Les Toques Blanches (Queensland Branch) in association with La Chaine des Rotisseurs Brisbane and Chefs of the Future Assoc. Inc.

It coincides with the Queensland Hospitality Industry Conference and Expo and sees Queensland chefs take on seven different culinary challenges over three days.

“Around 300 chefs and apprentice chefs from Queensland’s leading restaurants compete so it is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of Queensland food products,” Mr Mickel said.

“I think we’d all like to see even more Queensland food being served up in our restaurants and cafes.”
